Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review Chapters 4, 6, 7 and 10 in Correctional Leadership Competencies for the 21st Century: Executives and Senior-Level Leaders (Campbell & Dobel & Katsampes & Mactavish & Yates, 2014). Conduct
research to locate the vision and mission statements for a law
enforcement or correctional organization upon which to base your initial
post.
Vision
and mission statements are critical tools that inform the organization
and the community about what is important to that organization and how
that organization views their role and responsibility in carrying out
their duties. They identify the guiding principles by which the
organization will function.
Using
the vision and mission statements you have selected, evaluate the
contents in the context of organizational commitment to ethical
behavior. In your initial post, identify the central message(s), and
explain the leadership values that are communicated. Analyze the
statements and explain the legal policies and Constitutional mandates
you see reflected in them. Putting yourself in the role of a citizen in
the community being served, describe your impression of this
organization based on their vision and mission statements. Discuss the
expectations you would have of the performance of members of this
organization if they adhered to this vision and mission. Describe any
deficiencies or omissions you have identified and explain why you
believe they should be corrected.
From
your own perspective and drawing on your studies within this course,
discuss whether or not you believe the vision and mission statements are
realistic and attainable and provide a rationale for your position.
Suggest changes that would make these documents more meaningful as tools
for strategic planning and ethical behavior.
